Utah Repertory Theater’s “I Love You Because”

On March 23rd, 2013, I attended Utah Repertory Theater Company’s production of I Love You Because. I was immediately charmed by the historic Murray Theatre and the opening weekend buzz of the lobby. As I was seated, I watched the other audience members file in with anticipation and take their seats. I found myself developing a bit of anxiety, as my sightlines were slowly blocked, one by one, by the other audience members. After the first few scenes, I realized I wouldn’t be able to see any of the action taking place in three out of the five acting areas. Only the two acting areas which were raised on a second story were visible. I shifted in my seat and glanced nervously around at the other audience members, wondering if they were having the same experience. While the onlookers in the first two rows seemed incredibly happy, everyone behind them seemed confused and uncomfortable, as if they were missing out as well. I watched audience members shift two seats left, then three seats right, then jump an aisle, trying to improve their view. This seemed to be of little help, so many of us resigned to wait it out until intermission.

At intermission, I decided to be bold and take a stand. I left my ticketed seat and moved to the first row house left. I worry this may have sparked a revolution, as several other audience members quickly followed my lead and moved to the best available seat they could find. Although I felt a slight twinge of guilt over this, I was instantly relieved when the stage lights came up and I could see the action taking place. Not only was I able to see, but I was able to enjoy the performance. The microphones had had several problems throughout the first act, which were continuing into the second act, making it difficult to hear. However, now that I could see the action taking place, I was able to follow the events without perfect sound quality. I was especially ecstatic that I could now see the action, as I quickly became enveloped in the world of the musical.

The ensemble gave beautiful and energetic performances that kept the audience entertained and intrigued. Though the supporting roles were sometimes over-the-top and upstaged the main action, the four lead actors did a spectacular job of making the stereotypical seem organic. The characters were familiar, relatable, and heartwarming, making unrequited love seem all the more devastating. They not only gave the audience a fun way to spend the afternoon, but also reminded us of the power of saying “I love you because” and forgetting the words “I love you anyways”. Perhaps the most impressive aspect of the performance was the vocal talent onstage. As I followed the trials and tribulations of the characters, I consistently found myself marveling at the gusto of the voices bringing them to life. Madeline Weinberger’s performance as Marcy Fitzwilliams was enchanting; offering perfectly timed comedy and beautifully belted songs. My delight with the second act left me feeling sad that I hadn’t been able to see or hear much of the first act. However, I enjoyed this performance overall and would recommend it to a friend. Just be sure to get a good seat.

One Response to Utah Repertory Theater’s “I Love You Because”

  1. Johnny Hebda says:

Kelly…we would like to offer you comp tickets to come and see the show again. We have tirelessly worked and worked and have now fixed both the seating and sound issues you experienced. This being our first time in this theater, we had to work out some of these issues. We would love to have you come again and give a review on the show itself and not the challenges of the venue as with the adjustments made on Sunday and Monday, the issues you spoke of will not occur again. Thank you.
