This deliriously silly musical is satirically based on the notorious 1936 anti-marijuana film meant to discourage pot-smoking in the day’s-youth. Poorly acted and poorly produced, the public-service film was quickly forgotten until rediscovered in the Library of Congress in 1971. The film was re-released as a gag event for pot smokers and rapidly became an underground cult classic for the college midnight movie crowd.
Dark Horse Company Theatre brings the musical version of the underground phenomenon back to the Egyptian after their critically acclaimed 2010 production. Reefer Madness tells the story of young Jimmy Harper and his sweetheart Mary Lane, two wholesome teens who fall prey to the slick drug-pusher Jack, and his Reefer Den of Denizens and Delinquents. Join us for this harrowing tale of an innocent youth gone wild as he’s lured into the dangerous world of marijuana. Guided along the way by George Washington, Lady Liberty, and even Jesus himself, can Jimmy escape the all-but-certain doom of the Devil Weed, and live to tell the tale? Reefer Madness is sure to leave you rolling in the aisles with laughter and a severe case of the “munchies”!
