Dying is easy. Comedy is hard. It’s been five years since I was first introduced to Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. I was an instant fan. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is a rare comedy in that it mixes lowbrow comedy with witty lyrics and wordplay. But even more than that, it’s the fun of being a bit naughty, the competitive friendship between Lawrence and Freddy that drew me in. It’s hard to say why we love to watch stories about con men. Freddy and Lawrence are absolutely despicable – men who prey on the better nature of women to further their own end. Yet they are easy to fall in love with, perhaps because they play to that side of us that wants to rebel, wants to break the rules, and wants to have fun doing it. And more than that, we want to do it at the side of our best friends, the ones who guarantee a good time (although they can’t guarantee the cops won’t be called). Don’t take away any lessons from the behavior of these men. But have a blast. Have a ball. And remember, it is the people you are with who make the ride worth it. — Director, Brighton Sloan
