Elizabeth von Arnim’s novel, The Enchanted April, tells the story of four women in 1920’s England, that couldn’t be more different, yet couldn’t be more similar. Lotty and Rose, both miserable in their marriages, happen to meet at their ladies’ club, and stumble upon a newspaper advertisement for a “small mediaeval Italian castle on the shores of the Mediterranean to be let furnished for the month of April”. They deduce that a month in Italy would do them both some good and decide to seek other ladies to share the expense. They reluctantly take on the brittle, disapproving, and elderly, Mrs. Fisher, and the stunningly beautiful, but aloof, Lady Caroline Dester. During the month away from their dreary lives and rainy homeland, basking in the blossoms of wisteria and the hazy heat of Italy, each one is charmed and changed by the magic of the castle, as the four women find their commonalities and rediscover love and joy.
Utah Lyric Opera Director and Emmy nominee, Elizabeth Hansen and composer, C. Michael Perry have collaborated to adapt this truly enchanting and delightful story for the stage. Covey Center for the Arts is excited to announce the production of this adaption in the Brinton Theater, April 11 – May 4, 2013.
