Synopsis:

On the outskirts of rural Idaho, a 600-pound man lives out a life of seclusion and loneliness. All hope seems lost. And as his health worsens with each passing day, he slowly discovers redemption can sometimes be found in the most unexpected of places. The Hive Theatre Company proudly presents THE WHALE by Samuel D. Hunter. A Utah Premiere! Presented by special arrangement from SAMUEL FRENCH, INC.

Character Descriptions:

Ellie: Female, Age 17 (Actor must be able to portray a young teenager)

Ellie is an ill-tempered teenage girl who reluctantly attempts to connect with her estranged father (Charlie). She can be coldhearted and sometimes quite brutal, but certainly not without her own sense of independence and charm.

Elder Thomas: Male, Age 19 (Actor must be able to portray a young LDS missionary)

Elder Thomas is an inspiring LDS missionary who will stop at nothing to serve his fellow man. He can be naïve, gullible, and just a tad too eager at times; but a nice kid nonetheless, with a decent head on his shoulders.

Mary: Female, Age 40-46

Mary is a single mother who is struggling to raise her rambunctious teenage daughter (Ellie). After she mistakenly reconnects with her ex-husband (Charlie), she finds herself at an impasse; desperately trying to make sense of her past, future, and present.

*The roles of Charlie and Liz have been pre-cast; all other roles are available.
