This beautiful story weaves together Dr. Seuss’ most famous tales and characters in unexpected and wonderful ways.

Director – Taylor Twitchell and Alix Van Noy

Music Director –

Costuming and Makeup Design – Michelle Hickman

Please prepare 16 to 32 bars of a musical piece in the style of the show, and a 10-20 second character piece from your favorite Dr. Seuss book. Character breakdowns – All characters, expect Young Kangaroo, will be cast at any age. We are open to any age playing all roles, so we have not put an age range in the character breakdown. Even if you don’t think you “fit the character” come anyway, because you just might!

Now one of the most performed shows in America, Seussical is a fantastical, magical, musical extravaganza! Tony winners, Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (Lucky Stiff, My Favorite Year, Once on This Island, Ragtime), have lovingly brought to life all of our favorite Dr. Seuss characters, including Horton the Elephant, The Cat in the Hat, Gertrude McFuzz, lazy Mayzie and a little boy with a big imagination – Jojo. The colorful characters transport us from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus to the invisible world of the Whos.

The Cat in the Hat tells the story of Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust that contains the Whos, including Jojo, a Who child sent off to military school for thinking too many “thinks.” Horton faces a double challenge: not only must he protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must guard an abandoned egg, left in his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant. Seussical is fun for the whole family! Performers of all ages will be excited to portray the characters from the familiar Dr. Seuss fables.

The Cat in the Hat – (male or female) The essence and narrator of the story. Stirs things up, but always has a way to put it all back together again. Great energy and comedic timing. Able to do impressions is a plus. Strong character vocals. JoJo – (can be played by a boy or girl but the character is a boy) a smart child and a “Thinker” with a wild imagination. High energy and able/willing to show a wide range of emotions. Thing 1 and Thing 2 – (male or female) Non-speaking roles, but will be on stage the majority of the show. Strong comedic timing and able to show a wide range of emotions, without speaking. They will be The Cat in the Hats little helpers. Will be the set changers/prop holders/scene setters. Acrobats, flexibility, streignth ecc. are all a plus. Need strong actors for these two roles! Horton the Elephant – (male) Gentle and sincere. With a big heart and responsible personality. He always wants to do the right thing. Gertrude McFuzz – (female) Very self-conscious and aware that her one-feather tail isn’t perfect. Throughout the show, Gertrude goes from vain, neurotic, nervous and shy to one that is selfless, caring and accepts herself for who she is. Mayzie La Bird – (female) Self-centered, selfish, and vain. Manipulates everyone (especially Horton) into doing what she wants. Needs confidence and be able to stand out and shine. Large vocal numbers, must be a strong singer. Sour Kangaroo – (female) Has a lot of attitude and is opinionated. She spurs on a lot of the bad things that happen to Horton, so she must be able to make a crowd stop and listen to her on command. Strong belting voice needed. Mr. and Mrs. Mayor – (male and female) Father and Mother to JoJo. Leaders to the Who’s in tough times. Must have strong comedic timing and great chemistry with each other. General Gengus Khan Schmitz – (male) Bursting with pride over the military academy he runs and the strong boys he turns out. Truly believes he is making the world a better place – though he is misguided in how to accomplish this.
