Man of La Mancha

Auditions for Man of La Mancha will be held BY VIDEO SUBMISSION ONLY. Videos must be received no later than 11:59pm on Tuesday, October 11th to be considered for callbacks. Specific details about video submission are below.

Man of La Mancha will be directed by Dr. Andrew Thorn.

In-person callbacks, by invitation only, are scheduled for Saturday, October 15th.

Rehearsals will begin on or around October 22nd. Show dates are January 20, 21, 23, 27, 28, 30, February 3, 4, & 6 2023 and will be performed in Nephi Utah.

Video Audition Details:

Please prepare a monologue in the style of the show (1-2 minutes).  Please also include 1 minute of a song in the style of the show that shows off your vocal and dramatic range. The play is set in a Spanish Dungeon in the 1600s. Please audition using the voice appropriate for the character(s) you wish to perform.

YouTube links and non-secured Google Drive links are easiest. Several people will be watching your audition video and open links make it simple for everyone to access.

A NOTE ABOUT CASTING: The roles of Don Quijote and Sancho have been cast. All other roles are open. We invite anyone and everyone to audition for all other roles, regardless of any physical attribute, gender, race, age, ability, ethnicity, or experience. All are welcome at audition.

Character Descriptions

(The following roles are available. We are looking for a diverse cast with a variety of body types.)

Aldonza / Dulcinea (Female Lead; able to play 25 to 40) A serving woman and a part-time prostitute at the inn, Aldonza is rough on the exterior, but has a gentle heart inside and yearns to believe what Don Quixote tells her. Quixote falls in loves with her and insists her name is Dulcinea and that she is a beautiful, gentle woman. Voice: Mezzo-Soprano Belter High Notes G#5/A♭5 Low Notes G#3/A♭3

The Innkeeper (The Governor): (Adult Mature Male) A large and powerful man, he is kind as the Innkeeper, but as the Governor is the leader of the inmate society in the prison. Voice: Bass High Notes C#4/D♭4 Low Notes G2

Dr. Carrasco (The Duke & Knight of the Mirrors): As the character of the Duke, he is sidekick to the Governor; however, when he plays Dr. Carrasco, he is Antonia’s fiancé. He thinks Don Quixote mad and insists that he come home and be treated for his malady. Voice Baritone

The Padre (Muleteer): As the character of the Padre his pious and sincere. As a Prisoner he is psychotic. As a Muleteer, he is course and rough. Voice: Tenor

The Housekeeper (Innkeepers Wife) (Adult Mature Female) As the Housekeeper she is timid and self-righteous. As the Innkeepers wife she is rough and terse. Voice: Soprano

The Barber (Muleteer) (Male, able to play 20s to 30s) As the Barber he is happy and jovial and aware of Quijote’s madness but hesitant to say anything. As the muleteer he is rough and terse. Voice: Tenor

Pedro: The head muleteer, Pedro is a mean and vicious man, leading an attack on Aldonza.
