Audition Notice for NEW ROCK MUSICAL!

The Performer Studio and Salt Lake Singers Academy are thrilled to announce auditions for their workshop production for a NEW ROCK MUSICAL based on the music and lyrics of Journey. “To Be Alive Again - The Journey” will be performed on June 12th and 13th in South SL at the Utah Children’s Theatre. This beautiful professional venue has hosted our tribute concerts for the last 4 years!

Auditioners must prepare a verse and a chorus from a rock song (NOT Journey), a verse and a chorus from a Broadway song and a one minute monologe. NO accompanist will be provided so auditioners must bring music on a CD, thumb drive, phone or MP3 player. YouTube karaoke tracks are also fine. Please email the particular link ahead of time to [email protected]. No a cappella auditions, please.

Ages 10 through 60+ are invited to audition. Specific roles are listed below.

Those successful at the initial appointment audition will be asked to attend callbacks on March 26th from 6-9pm where they will learn a short dance sequence and blend on a harmony that they will be given ahead of time to learn. Sides from the show will be provided to read.

The production will be directed by Kait Kingston. Character development and some script writing will be workshopped by the performers cast in the show.

SYNOPSIS
To Be Alive Again - The Journey is a new full-length, two act musical about four girls in Anytown with a vocal dream. The Carnival Master shows up with promises of fame, fortune and happiness and soon the girls are off on an adventure to the City of Hope, meeting characters along the way. Their Music Teacher and mentor is a small town girl with a past love who is now a big Rockstar and part of the Voice Carnival.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

1-MUSIC TEACHER: Female, mid 20’s - 30’s. All Ethnicities. (Principal)
Well-loved music teacher at Anytown High. She’s the small town girl who took that midnight train, where she met ROCKSTAR. She fights for her students and their dreams. She believes in others, but not so much in herself.

2-ROCKSTAR: Male, mid 20’s - 30’s. All Ethnicities. (Principal)
Judge on The Voice Carnival. He’s the city boy from South Detroit who took the midnight train, where he met MUSIC TEACHER. He doesn’t have a rockstar ego, he’s suave but with a sense of humor and generosity. He’s a romantic, a dreamer, and a believer.

3-CARNIVAL MASTER: Male 40’s, All Ethnicities. (Principal)
Bigger than life. Both of this world and not of this world. Powerful & alluring. Loves music and the show life. Wants the whole world to sing. Is sunshine and spreads happiness and fun. Is from The City of Hope.

4-CHORUS: Males & Females, Teens & Adults, All Ethnicities. (To understudy Principal roles)
8 Ensemble actors - must be able to sing harmony and moving well is a plus. Some ensemble members will be assigned featured solos.

5-THE LONELY: Male or Female, 18+, All Ethnicities.
Smooth, mysterious, conniving. Goes after singers with broken dreams.

6-SUZANNE: Female, mid teens, All Ethnicities. (Principal)
Life of the Party. Dramatic, passionate, flirty, spontaneous, social, outgoing, fun. She is on the Dean’s list at school and is socially fearless, but very insecure when it comes to love.

7-SHERRIE: Female, mid teens, All Ethnicities. (Principal)
Responsible Organizer. Respectful, quiet and humble, she has incredible talent. Misses her mother who recently passed away. Struggles to find confidence. Feels very alone.

8-JESSE: Female, 17, All Ethnicities. (Principal)
Quirky Misfit. (comedic) Observant, reflective, goofy, has her own blog and YouTube. Grew up travelling with her parents’ jobs. Outdoorsy, sails, camps, hikes. Loves to take photos. Mature for her age.

9-APRIL: Female, 17, All Ethnicities. (Principal)
Cool Geek. Politically active, an environmentalist, the cool geek of the group. Practical, driven, focused. Loves to plan out every detail. Accepted into a top ten college far from home.

10-JACK: Male, mid teens, All Ethnicities. (Principal)
Hot, hard working, playful, loyal, and loving. Captain of the rowing team. Happy, high energy, passionate and charismatic. Every girl swoons when they meet him but his heart is taken.

11-SONNY: Male, 17, All Ethnicities. (Principal)
Super Genius. Cool/sexy geek. Politically active, an environmentalist. He’s got an internship with Intel. Is on a fast-track. Lives in the moment.

12-ERON - MUSE OF LOVE & POETRY: Female, mid-late teens, All Ethnicities. (Featured)
Muse to SUZANNE. Dramatic, passionate, flirty, outgoing. Her specialty is helping people fall in love.

13-MEL - MUSE OF SONG & TRAGEDY: Female, mid-late teens, All Ethnicities. (Featured)
Muse to SHERRIE. Creative, strong, knowing, reassuring and fun. Sees much deeper into things than most. Her specialty is raising spirit through song.

14-THALIA - MUSE OF COMEDY: Female, mid-late teens, All Ethnicities. (Featured)
Muse to JESSE. Playful, mischievous, joyous, festive. Her specialty is courage through humor.

15-POLLY - MUSE OF AGRICULTURE: Female, mid-late teens, All Ethnicities. (Featured)
Muse to APRIL. Serious, pensive, meditative, loving, and nurturing. Her specialty is bringing clarity through nature’s lens.

MELODY: Female, mid 40’s, All Ethnicities. (Principal) *PRECAST, understudy still desired.
SHERRIE’S departed mother, stuck between worlds. Loving, fun, kind, and encouraging. Was a loving mother, a singer and a music teacher when she was alive.

JESSE’S DAD: Male mid 30’s to mid 40’s, All Ethnicities. (Principal)
Hard working, responsible and stressed out. Outdoorsy. Used to be a freelance photographer for National Geographic but now works at a factory as a manager in Anytown.

JESSE’S MOM: Female mid 30’s to mid 40’s, All Ethnicities. (Principal)
Outdoorsy, creative and practical. Used to be a correspondent for National Geographic but is now writing for the local newspaper in Anytown.

MOTHER MOON: Female, mid 20’s - 60’s. All Ethnicities. (Featured)
The classic Goddess-mother figure, all-knowing, all-seeing and ever present. A guiding force who brings peace, fulfillment, and renewed energy to all she’s around. Mentors the 4 MUSES as they learn how to inspire the girls.

Once cast, performers will join specific Workshop courses and private coaching sessions with the director. These are taught through Salt Lake Singers Academy (SLSA).

WORKSHOPS-DATES AND TIMES: Workshop classes will take place at SLSA in South SL during the weeks of April 6 through June 4th. Workshops meet once a week in the evening from 6-9pm for 9 weeks. Workshops take place on ONE of the following nights: Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays OR Thursdays. It depends on final casting as to which workshop night students will attend.

PRIVATE COACHING SESSIONS: will take place at SLSA in South SL during the weeks of April 6 through June 4th. These private sessions are scheduled individually with Kait Kingston, the show’s director, and generally meet once a week for one hour, for up to 9 weeks. A portion of these sessions will be spent in the recording studio creating the final production CD.

CONCERT WORKSHOPS COST $30 PER WEEK FOR A 3 HOUR CLASS ONE NIGHT A WEEK FOR 9 WEEKS. PRIVATE COACHING SESSIONS COST $45 A WEEK FOR UP TO 9 WEEKS (depending on casting, this number might be lower).

WHAT STUDENTS DO IN THESE WORKSHOPS:
1-GET IN SHAPE: Learn and practice new vocal exercises that enable and strengthen both the voice and body.
2-GROW: Learn new skills to help deliver a truly great performance in the musical theatre genre.
3-COLLABORATE: Make new friends and learn how to bring out the creativity and confidence in each other through intentional peer support.
4-RECORD: Create a professional recording of their vocals in the show.
5-CREATE: Be a part of building a new character for the musical theatre stage, from the ground up.
6-PERFORM: Perform in a world premiere workshop production in a professional theatrical venue.

Our coaches will take even the most advanced singers to the next level with their performance skills. With our Tribute Concert Workshops, we feel that the creation of new works provides an opportunity for investment and ownership that performers rarely get to experience.
