The Ziegfeld Theater is pleased to present the American Musical Classic, West Side Story.
From the first notes to the final breath,West Side Story is one of the most memorable musicals and greatest love stories of all time. A modern day Romeo and Juliet, the story begins by introducing us to rival neighborhood gangs in New York City, the American Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks. Two young lovers, Tony and Maria, want nothing more than to to escape their world of hate together. But as honorary members of the race war they reside in, their dream can only end in a familiar tragedy. The result is a lesson for their community and for us all, that hate breeds hate and only wide acceptance and tolerance can break the cycle of violence.
Familiar melodies from this classic range from the beautiful “Maria” to the humorous “Gee, Officer Krupke” to the heartbreaking, “Somewhere.” Choreographed by Talese Hunt, an accomplished professional dancer and former Rockette, whose movement and directions, while continuing in the tradition begun by the inimitable Jerome Robbins, add new life, beauty and excitement to the story.
Don’t miss your opportunity to see this seldom-produced masterpiece.
