Black with brown... "Queer-Eye" advice needed
Feb 1st, 2010 at 2:01pm

So they told me not to dress up for this interview today, which is cool, but I just can't see myself going to a job interview in jeans... I have this great-looking dark-brown corduroy sport coat, and some nice brown shoes with a matching belt. I was thinking of pairing them with black Dockers, a crimson shirt and black sweater vest... will that work or just look wrong? I can always go with black shoes and belt, of course.

Black, brown, grey, white, metallics-- to me, they're all neutrals, and so they're okay. It doesn't have to "matchy-match", it just has to "go".  Wink I think you'd be fine, but if you would feel more comfortable with everything feeling "coordinated", go that way!

I'm not queer enough to know the answer to this question.  But good luck with your interview!

I have a queer voice in the back of my head that tells me never to wear grey/blacks with brown/tans.

I don't know if that is still true though.

Have you already gone?

DO NOT WEAR THE BLACK DOCKERS!

If you're going to go with the brown jacket over the crimson shirt, wear brown or tan pants.  Make the crimson be the one different thing, the thing that pops.

Good choice with crimson, too.  Is that because it's supposedly a power color?  I always wear something red or reddish to job interviews or auditions.

Although I'm certain that you've already gone, I'd agree with what Mr A said.  And since we're the queers... you have to listen to us.   Grin

Other than that, I hope it all went well!

ALL RIGHT ALL RIGHT, you are obvsly queers that do not watch What Not To Wear. (I am sure some fashiony people that frequent this board are spinning in their early graves to hear that I take advice from that show, but I do, so ha.)

hey i watch that show. and love it. and LOVE Clinton. he is a hottie.

And when it comes to mixing and matching blacks and brown...really i can't say yes or no. It all depends on the shade of brown and the blacks etc. Generally though i wouldn't recommend BLACK with any browns. However, a nice charcoal grey pant with a rich mahogony brown shoe or a lighter brown shoe with a more yellowy hue to it is not a bad thing, but jet black dockers and brown doc martens wouldn't work...like i said...it just depends on the shade and color...and there are too many options in that realm. Some work, some dont.

Anyway...

So it really comes down to whether or not the person interviewing you is queer or not.
