Classic Derivatives
Jan 25th, 2010 at 3:10pm

So. Because I am a masochist (apparently) and because the idea made me and Alex laugh, I am going to spend a goodly portion of this year reading derivative works of classic novels and blogging about it.

Derivative works like Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, for instance, or for worse instance, Mr Darcy: Vampyre. Or anything to do with Jane and Rochester's daughter(s), or anything where an everyday lady somehow gets stuck in a Jane Austen novel and bones Darcy or whatever... you get the idea. I anticipate that this will be 1) hilarious, 2) enlightening in its way, 3) quality entertainment for me and a handful of other people.

So far the rules are:

1.) Must be a derivative work of an established classic.

2.) Must be a derivative work of something I have actually read and read recently. For example, reviewing a derivative of Pride and Prejudice would be cheating until I reread the original work, as I have not touched it since high school. (It doesn't matter if the story is well-known/famous; if I haven't read it recently, I am not allowed to tackle its spinoffs.)

3.) If I choose it, I must finish it.

4.) Must be a derivative of an actual literary work; cannot be a novel involving the author him/herself as a character.

What do you guys think? Is this funny or is it going to kill me slowly and without mercy?

Funny.

I'm trying desperately to find a book this project brought to mind.  I read it decades ago, and I recall finding in the jr fiction section of the library, though it was a bit above me at the time.  It was called Frankenstein's Mother, if I recall correctly (though I can't find anything about it on Amazon, or any place else; I'm just about to turn to the whatwasthatbook site to see if they can find it because now it's driving me bonkers), and the scientist's mother came to visit and kibbutz and the men (man and monster) were very put upon.  I think there was another torched-up mob as well.

But it came to mind, since you wanted books you've recently interacted with, and I remember you saying you read Frankenstein back near Halloween?

I didn't even see this until just now! I'm sorry! That would be genuinely awesome. I've got a good little starting list, and Amazon's recommendations when I look something up have been hilarious and fantastic, but any suggestions are totally welcome!

Carrie Bebris writes a series of mysteries that follow Elizabeth and Darcy after they're married, and incorporate characters, locations, etc., from other Austen books as well.  I don't know if you've read any of them recently enough to qualify , but here's the list anyway (and you might as well re-read Pride and Prejudice, because I expect there are several derivatives of it around!)

Pride and Prescience, based on Pride and Prejudice
Suspense and Sensibility, based on Sense and Sensibility
North by Northanger, based on Northanger Abbey
The Matters at Mansfield, based on Mansfield Park
The Intrigue at Highbury, based on Emma

YESSSS! Labeq, I love it! Those actually sound entertaining and not as much "oh no what have they done to my favorite characters", you know? Those could be a good time! (And re-reading P&P is definitely on the agenda before I start this little project here.)

And thanks, Only, your suggestions are helping lots. Cheesy
