My daughter has been accepted as one of only a small handful of students from various Utah colleges to go to Thailand with International Student Volunteers to work with Development and Education Programme for Daughters and Communities (DEPDC) on July 9th this Summer.

She will be doing volunteer work in Thailand for a month and is looking for caring businesses or individuals who can help to sponsor her work. She needs approximately $3,000 in sponsorships in order to work in Thailand. Any contribution is tax-deductible.

I'll post more details and information as I get it. Please read about DEPDC and human trafficking in Thailand here:

You're a brave parent raising a brave daughter, because when I read articles like this http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27098993/  (and that's in the US, for pete's sake!) I think I would be constipated with worry for that entire month.

I don't suppose you are worried?

You have no idea. I FREAKED OUT when she put Thailand and "save the sex slaves" as her #1 choice in the application. She could have gone to Australia and worked saving baby turtles or something. But I'm just the mom and I know my daughter loves working with children and has a heart of gold. I also know she chose anthropology as her field and will probably always be traveling to all kinds of places and studying all kinds of things that freak me out. If that is what she loves and what she wants to do, more power to her.  She might look petite and pale and like she is ten years old, but she is a really determined and tough woman who knows what she wants in life.

And yes, I'll probably have indigestion for a month.

For those who want to donate to this cause, my daughter still needs to raise $1,500.  She was fortunate to have someone donate $1,000 this last week!  Thank you so much to that person (who wants to remain anonymous)!

We now have a link to a print-out form that you need to fill out an send to my daughter to sponsor her volunteer work.  In order for this to be tax-deductible it has to be done this way.

If you would like to donate, please PM me and I will send you this link.

Any amount helps!  Thank you!

At least tell me she's a black belt in some sort of martial art.  That she can decapitate a man with an emery board.  Can throw a knife within 1" accuracy at 50 yards.  Just something to let us know she can take names and kick major ass, because those slave traders and not gentle souls who can be talked out their chosen profession with some heart-to-heart appeal to sensibility.  She may need to hand some people their butts.

If she doesn't, maybe that should be one of your parental conditions for going -- intensive martial arts training.

Well... she does frequently decapitate zombies while playing Resident Evil.  Maybe that will count for something.

If she virtually goes to Thailand, sure.  Otherwise, for land's sake, turn her into a REAL deadly weapon!  She should be as (or more) dangerous as The Bride in Kill Bill

If anyone knows of a business who might be able to sponsor my daughter, please contact me. She is paying her own airline tix, but she still needs at least $1,000. This is tax-deductible and works nicely for a business who has funds set aside for charity.

I know this is a hard time for most of us to donate money, but it is good to remember that there are people in the world even worse off than we are. The sex slave industry is a horrible thing (as indicated vividly by Cranberry) and it's great to have an ongoing program that rescues children from a miserable life and gives them the power of an education and hope for the future.

Thank you!
