“Horton the Elephant, the Cat in the Hat, and all of your favorite Dr. Seuss characters spring to life onstage in Seussical JR., a fantastical musical extravaganza from TONY winners Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (Lucky Stiff, My Favorite Year, Once On This Island and Ragtime).
Transporting audiences from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus, the Cat in the Hat, our narrator, tells the story of Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust containing tiny people called the Whos, including Jojo, a Who child who gets in trouble for thinking too many “thinks.” Horton’s challenge is twofold - not only must he protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must also guard an abandoned egg that’s been left in his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping, and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family, and community are challenged and emerge triumphant!
Seussical JR. is great fun for the whole family. Young performers will be excited to portray the characters from the popular Dr. Seuss books.”
Character List:
Horton the Elephant: is a big-hearted elephant who is steadfast, responsible and always tries to do the right thing for his friends. He is imaginative, unselfconscious and very sincere. This is our biggest role with a LOT of singing and acting involved.
Jojo: JoJo is the son (the directors will consider a young lady in this role as the daughter) of the Mayor and Mrs Mayor. Like Horton he is often dismissed for his dream of a better world. Lonely and feeling unappreciated, he finds a true friend in Horton. This role requires an excellent musician with a pure voice, excellent articulation, and a willingness to work long and hard to master some very difficult music.
The Cat in the Hat: is full of mischief, fun and imagination. The Cat stirs things up, causes trouble, but always sets things right again, helping Jojo to discover the power of her own imagination as they create the story for the show together. The Cat is a comic, clownish, over-the-top character, taking on many different personalities. The Cat does sing but it is more of an acting role than a singing role that can be played by a boy or a girl. The role requires impeccable timing, both musically and comically, as well as fluid movement. Being able to improvise (come up with your own things to say) well is a huge plus.
Gertrude Mc Fuzz: is very self-conscious, awkward and thinks that her one-feather tail isnʼt “perfect”. She wants desperately for Horton to notice her. She changes during the show from a nervous and shy bird into one with the power an confidence to save the day and care for a baby elephant bird. This should be a very strong singer and an actor who is not afraid to be quirky and dramatic.
Mayzie La Bird: is self-centered, selfish, and vain (think Sharpay “High School Musical”). Mayzie will never admit to her own flaws. She manipulates anyone she can into doing what she wants. She isnʼt all bad though. In the end she tries to do the right thing. This role is for a great performer who can sing, act, and dance well.
Sour Kangaroo: is the Soul Queen of the jungle. She is bossy, mean, and has enough attitude for five villains. She does not enjoy foolishness and Horton is her number one target for ridicule. This role demands a strong Soul/Gospel style of singing.
Mr. Mayor & Mrs. Mayor: (of Whoville) are Jojoʼs parents trying very hard to raise a difficult child. They may get aggravated with Jojo, but they love her very much and try to do the right thing, even if it turns out to be a mistake.
Young Kangaroo: has a lot of attitude just like her mom! Sheʼs loud, bossy, confident, and a lot of fun! American Idol-type singer. This role is for a small actor.
The Wickershams: are monkeys from the jungle of Nool. They are buddies that like to tease, play pranks, and get a kick out of making mischief, although often at othersʼ expense.
The Bird Girls: The three Bird Girls are Mayzie wanna-bes. Each is beautiful, chic, and mean as snakes. The roles require excellent musicianship, excellent timing, and strong character skills. These are large vocal and dance roles.
Ensemble Who Citizens & Jungle Citizens: These characters have lots of singing and dancing to do as a group. Some may have featured solo parts.
