Article about an incident that happened at a theatre here in Vegas. Thought I would share and see what your opinion was on the matter. Not trying to start (yet another) discussion on community theatre or pay or what have you.....just what would you have done and was what he did really called for?

The company was promising some sort of stipend, and this actor was demanding a number. That number, whether it's a percentage, or a dollar amt should have been decided on by the company before the production started.

If the actor needs to get paid for using his talents, he shouldn't commit to roles with a community theater company, or any company that can't give him a firm number before he accepts the role. And he did commit and only cites the pay as the reason for his quitting. Had they been flakey or unorganized or abusive, then the walk-out would have been warranted. This one, in my NSHO was not.

I think the whole article is super tacky, truth be told. Sounds like the journalist has a chip on his shoulder.

That being said, the guy committed to the show. It sounds like the theater didn't cite numbers or promise anything-- in fact, it sounds like several jobs I've had. "Maybe a stipend? I don't know? Possibly?"

The fact that they asked the actor to return and that his talent was clearly respected and in demand shows that he was important to them. I think this sounds like an issue of injured pride and misunderstanding, but I think (from what the article reports) that the actor handled it badly.

If we're going to die, let's die looking like a Peruvian folk band.

I agree - the article itself is gossipy crap that shouldn't be published in any reputable paper.

Assuming this story is what it says it is* , the actor's in the wrong. You can't accept a role with no promise of money, then quit because you don't get paid. Just don't accept the job in the first place.

(*But I would not be surprised if there's a whole other story here ...)

There is no real theatre person writing for the papers down here. This guy, is really super.....ummm...biased in his reports. This was one that came up on the theatre forum for Las Vegas and the same question came up.....what was the point of this article? Besides slandering ones name and spreading gossip there was no real point to the story.

It makes me sad that a paper would even print something like that. What was the point in it except making the point that actors should get paid if the musicians are, or should get paid if they are promised.
