Has anybody else seen this? The first episode is probably the best TV pilot I've ever seen. A brilliant adaptation of Doyle's A Study in Scarlet that prefectly captured the sessence of the Holmes and Watson characters. The choices made in bringing them to the 21st century are all great, from having Watson still coming home from serving in Afghanistan, to Holmes preference for texting rather than making phone calls (which to me seems utterly true to the character).

I've been a have of actor Benedict Cumberbatch since he played Pitt the Younger in the film Amazing Grace, and of course Martin Freeman is terrific as always (seeing him in this has me even more excited to see him play Bilbo Baggins). I've still never seen a single episode of Doctor Who (and may or may not ever get around to it), but I now have great respect for Steven Moffat as a writer. This is the best thing I've seen on televsion in a long time. I very eagerly await the second episode, and hope that Cumberbatch and Freeman's buregeoning film career's don't kill future seasons.

They're watching it on PBS.  PBS is playing all three over three successive weekends.  So far 'dem folks, I'm presuming, have only seen the first one, but the other two are just as good or better.

If you need it online, PM me.

The ad after the show said they were on DVD. I'll definitely be buying these.

I don't think that I liked the second episode BETTER than the first, but I probably liked it just as well. I really wish there more than 3 episodes.

I think one of the great strengths is that they don't get too hung up on or self-congratulatory about gimmicks involving modernizing it. The stories and characters are the center of it, not the time period in which it takes place (which the writers quite rightly point out is true of the original Doyle stories as well).

I'm very excited.

I intend to buy these on DVD, but there's a nostalgic thing for me in watching there on PBs as part of "Mystery" which reminds me of eagerly awaiting new installments of the Jeremy Brett series. Watching this makes me giddy in the same way that the latest Star Trek movie did.

Again, I'm just really afriad that Cumberbatch and Freeman are getting too in demance for Season 2 to happen. Cumberbatch just wrapped Steven Spielberg's War Horse, and, is moving on to to a play, and Freeman is, of course, doing two Hobbitt movies. Thrilled to see these guys attached to films I'm so eagerly awaiting, but I didn't think I coould still get this addicted to TV drama. I want as much Sherlock as possible.

It was a great cliffhanger ending, it's just that, as I've mentioned before, I question the likelihood of getting the actors back together for another season.

I loved the tweaked literary references on this episode, like "I am lost without my blogger."

That was BEFORE Martin Freeman signed on to spend the next couple of years tromping through New Zealand/Middle Earth, starting in January. When can they fit this in?

True, but the word I heard is that it proved so popular in Britain that I doubt they'd give up on it so easily. I'm sure he'll arrange his schedule.
Edit: In fact, the DVDs were just released today, and they're already backordered by a month on Amazon.  Dumb Me for not pre-ordering...

You're talking about the DVDs of Season One, right?

I agree, the producers wouldn't want to give up on it easily, but a lot depends on whether Freeman and CUmberbatch are under contract. Freeman's Hobbit commitment is huge, and while Cumberbatch has finished shooting War Horse, he's got the new film version of John Le Carre's Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and playing Dr. Frankenstein on the London stage before he can get around to Sherlock again.

We'll see what happens. At the very least, I expect a bit of a wait.

Watched the first episode of this last night. Paused it in the middle and insisted that CanadaAlex watch it along with me. By the end, we were both squeaking and squealing and being generally fangirly.

I think it's safe to say we'll be continuing on here. Grin

The rampant Orientalism, yup. I get what they were trying to do/go for/recreate/homage, but just... it was a miss for me. For me, the episode derailed the mission of bringing Sherlock Holmes into a modern capacity by using outdated, narrow-minded, and silly depictions of Chinese culture and characters. I know that the "mystery of the Orient" was a big theme in Victorian literature, and I understand they were paying homage, but by the time I was halfway through, I was sort of dropping my head into my hands a lot.

There were good bits though! I just liked the first and third episodes much, much better.

I'm through the first two, now that my computer has been restored, the MKV files that were Sherlock were converted to  much more digestible (for my computer) MPEGS and burned to DVD, so my comp won't fuss over any aspect of it...

I loved the first episode, and this series hit at a perfect time, as there's a little bit of the Doctor in Sherlock's character and that's easing me through to the Christmas episode. I love the updating, while at the same time getting to wink at all the modern updates to the old stories (I'm your landlady, dear, not your housekeeper). The mystery was good, but I wanted to know at the end if both pills were poison and he'd developed an immunity, or if one was safe, like he said.

The second episode was OK... when the acrobat was revealed in the circus scene, I could only think, "we've found our grease-man." One thing I liked a lot about this episode was how much Watson was really contributing to the case, rather than just sitting back and marveling at Holmes' genius, despite there not being a real need for his medical opinions.

I'm planning to watch the third tonight, so more tomorrow.

See you're the first person I've read who made it make sense.  I know a lot of people in areas I hang out on the internet were screaming about that - race!fail - but I couldn't see what they were objecting to.  I mean, I see it's being stereotypical, but I always assume that when shown a stereotypical person that it's just them being that way, and we're not privileged to see other examples in the confines of that particular story.  Mostly I just roll my eyes and get bored.  So though I got their point, I didn't know why there was weeping and wailing and gnashing.  Holmes and Watson weren't themselves racist - the creators were just shortsighted.

But as you say, it was a perhaps misguided homage, and though I can appreciate that homage, the area they left unexplored, or interestingly-adapted to modern society.  I don't know - I guess that's why people I hear from about it undefinedly like it less than the other two.

But yes, #3 was goo-hood.

So #3 was pretty good, if not a bit predictable (too much into the genre), though the ending was pretty cool with the stand-off.

Did this guy sound like Alan Rickman at times? Because I though Cumberbatch did, at least by the second episode.

I wonder if Cumberbatch was one of the runners up for Doctor Who, and was given this role as a consolation prize?
