Ohhh you guys. I really disliked the second episode. I'm about to start the third one and my hopes are still high, but I was so, so dismayed.

Okay, I liked the third one more. The first is still my favorite by far, but I REALLY liked the third one a lot. Especially the last ten or fifteen minutes... oof. so good. THAT LAST SCENE.

The rampant Orientalism, yup. I get what they were trying to do/go for/recreate/homage, but just... it was a miss for me. For me, the episode derailed the mission of bringing Sherlock Holmes into a modern capacity by using outdated, narrow-minded, and silly depictions of Chinese culture and characters. I know that the "mystery of the Orient" was a big theme in Victorian literature, and I understand they were paying homage, but by the time I was halfway through, I was sort of dropping my head into my hands a lot.

There were good bits though! I just liked the first and third episodes much, much better.

I'm through the first two, now that my computer has been restored, the MKV files that were Sherlock were converted to  much more digestible (for my computer) MPEGS and burned to DVD, so my comp won't fuss over any aspect of it...

I loved the first episode, and this series hit at a perfect time, as there's a little bit of the Doctor in Sherlock's character and that's easing me through to the Christmas episode. I love the updating, while at the same time getting to wink at all the modern updates to the old stories (I'm your landlady, dear, not your housekeeper). The mystery was good, but I wanted to know at the end if both pills were poison and he'd developed an immunity, or if one was safe, like he said.

The second episode was OK... when the acrobat was revealed in the circus scene, I could only think, "we've found our grease-man." One thing I liked a lot about this episode was how much Watson was really contributing to the case, rather than just sitting back and marveling at Holmes' genius, despite there not being a real need for his medical opinions.

I'm planning to watch the third tonight, so more tomorrow.

See you're the first person I've read who made it make sense.  I know a lot of people in areas I hang out on the internet were screaming about that - race!fail - but I couldn't see what they were objecting to.  I mean, I see it's being stereotypical, but I always assume that when shown a stereotypical person that it's just them being that way, and we're not privileged to see other examples in the confines of that particular story.  Mostly I just roll my eyes and get bored.  So though I got their point, I didn't know why there was weeping and wailing and gnashing.  Holmes and Watson weren't themselves racist - the creators were just shortsighted.

But as you say, it was a perhaps misguided homage, and though I can appreciate that homage, the area they left unexplored, or interestingly-adapted to modern society.  I don't know - I guess that's why people I hear from about it undefinedly like it less than the other two.

But yes, #3 was goo-hood.

So #3 was pretty good, if not a bit predictable (too much into the genre), though the ending was pretty cool with the stand-off.

I agree that episode 1 was probably my favorite of the three

Okay, the stand off. Seriously, wtf? And not a fan of the guy who plays Moriarty. What's with the weird voice??

Benedict Cumberbatch reminds me a LITTLE TOO MUCH of someone I once (moreorless) dated.  But then I remember that BC is shorter than SIO(MOL)D, so it's good.  Still weird, though...
