So, I've been invited for the 2nd time to join "the international honor society for 2 year colleges" because of "my outstanding grade point average and academic record." They tell me there are all sorts of benefits of joining, and that this makes me a prestigious person, impresses employers, cleans and straightens my teeth, etc. Cost is a one time fee of $75 dollars.

I really don't see myself shelling out $75.00 for a few silly Latin words that sound like a group of characters from Animal House, but I'm just wondering, has anybody heard of this? IS there any benefit to joining something like this? Does it look good on a resume? Because I have to tell you, the Boy Scouts of America lied to me about all those emplyers who will automatically give you a job if you're an Eagle Scout.

From what I understand, as far as practicality goes, if you are actually involved with the organization rather than just in name only then you end up participating in a lot of volunteer work, which DOES look good on job applications.

There's also that thing where movies and TV make it seem like you'll have lots of connections, and people's parents will give you jobs because you know their children, but I think 1. again you'd have to be involved and 2. it may just be storytelling and/or wishful thinking on the part of the storytellers.

If it's just paying a fee to be included under the banner of the Latin alphabet, then it's probably not quite as impressive, unless you perform legerdemain in front of employers and let them THINK you were truly involved.

"Volunteer work"? What is this, some kind of communist "Obama youth" organization?
