Hey, all ...

I teach with the Theatre Arts Conservatory, part of Plan-B Theatre. We're looking at expanding our classes to cover adult actors.

This would be a year-long program focused on scene study, meeting once a week. It would cater to all levels, from beginner who is looking for the basic tools to the advanced actor who wants to explore further. It would be primarily focused on stage acting, and would explore texts from Shakespeare to the modern day.

I'm asking here because one of the things I'd love to be able to do is to work with "community theatre actors" (and you know I hate that terminology) who may be looking for the next step in terms of acting craft.

I'm curious ... is this the kind of thing that is interesting at all to the community here on BSU? I'm not looking for a headcount at all, just wondering if the interest is out there ...

(Rosie, hope this is OK here. It's more of a general interest question than any specific announcement, so this seemed the most appropriate place.)

I would be all over that. As somebody who still wants to learn as much as I can about theater but is not going to be studying it in school (except for a few classes), I'd be totally interested!

(Especially with you teaching. I mean, hello. Not an opportunity to waste here.)

I think it would be great! I am someone that started acting pretty late. I am 27 and have been acting for three years now, and have been in 8. I feel I am actually a really good actor. My most recent roles have been leading roles, and I have learned alot from each show I have done. This is something that had I started earlier in life I would have pursued in school and as a professional career. I would love the opportunity to take some adult classes, and learn about this fine art. I know other people that would as well. Great idea.

Mr. Spiker,� it might be a good idea to offer the opportunity to the parents of your current students.� I've been part of an adult acting class that has been meeting together for about a year and a half.� It started out with some parents of young acting students who wanted the opportunity to learn the craft for themselves.� Some wanted to share the stage with their children.� Then it grew from word-of-mouth from there.� It's been a great experience, and almost all the adults have been cast in local community lead roles over the past year.� And most importantly:� all have grown as actors through the scene work study.

My guess is that if you get a few adults to start out with, it'll grow pretty fast from there.� As a side note:� we've found it a necessity to reserve part of class time for auditioning practice since there is always someone going out for an audition at any given time.

Thanks for the idea on contacting the parents, kitchensinger! That's a great idea.

I ran a version of this class last year specifically designed for "Pre-Professionals", college students considering careers as actors, but not interested in the ATP at the U. One of the class rules was whatever was on the docket, we would always take time to do audition prep. Since many were looking at grad schools .... there was a lot of audition prep!

I am tempted to take the class, to continue learning more about acting so I can direct actors better. There are plenty of classes out there, but I'd rather take yours. But, my future plans are almost exclusively for film. Do you think it would be useful anyway?
