An extrmely busy and stressful period of my life, combined with trouble getting good sleep,  has caused my to double or triple my caffiene intake over the past few months (yes, i'm aware the overconsumption of caffiene may very well have been detrimental to the sleep and counterproductive). This isn't good for my kidney, and my nephrologist has told me to cut down to no more than one caffeinated beverage per day (for the time being I've just eliminated caffiene entirely. I think I have a somewhat addictive personality, and I don't excel at moderation).

Does anyone know of any good, healthy ways to increase energy while you're on the go and booked up all the time? That actually work?

Addendum: I've been asking a number of people about this, and all of the basic "drugs and alcohol" suggestion jokes have been made. if somebody has a truly orginal variation I'd love to hear it, but you'll have to work pretty hard Wink

I've heard that adjusting your diet can help with sleep/energy, such as eating more dark leafy greens and things like sunflower seeds.  I've noticed when I eat healthier I do sleep better and generally feel more rested.  Though it's not a quick fix like caffeinne, it may help more in the end.  Smiley  Otherwise, my "quick fix" energy boost was once pink lemonade and skittles, though I doubt that's any better than caffeinne.

*I have no idea what your diet is right now, I'm not meaning to imply you already eat poorly.

Energy supplements, plenty of water (dehydration leads to slower metabolism), walk/ exercise at night before you are going to bed.

Green Smoothies 4c. a day and Juicing 24-32 oz.!
Try to replace one meal a day with one of these or better yet, replace breakfast and lunch with one of each! It's 1000x BETTER than caffeine!

Could you tell me exactly what that is, and what's in it? Even if it's all natural, I need to know, because the one thing I can't touch again for the rest of my life is grapefruit/grapefruit juice.

I can always tell when I'm not getting enough water during a day, I start to get lethargic and cranky.  Another thing that I have to take is vitamin b12, as my body cannot absorb it properly from food any more.  When I don't get this as I'm supposed to, I lose energy as well.

Another thing that I have been noticing, is that if I eat smaller meals, and then a mid-meal snack, I seem to have a little more "go" during the day.

For example,

Breakfast - boiled egg & 1/2 c cottage cheese
snack (about 10:30) - cheese stick or 1/2 c fruit
lunch - usually stick to a dense protein, like chicken or fish, with some greens
snack (about 3:00) - 1/2 apple, banana, some crackers and cheese, etc...
dinner - again with the dense protein and some veggies or greens.

Ditto to staying hydrated and taking vitamin suppliments.

A simple one-a-day variety can do wonders (just check the list of vitamins included to make sure they're okay for your kidney)

This works for me too.  Caffeine or sugar-rushes like juice give quick energy, but can actually cause sugar levels to drop afterward, leaving you with low energy.    If you eat small meals through the day, with a combination of a protein and a carb (such as MRC has posted here), like nuts and fruit, or cheese and crackers or yogurt and berries, or cottage cheese and bread... then you have longer-lasting energy and your blood sugar doesn't drop, especially if you eat every 2.5 hours or so with a small snack.  The idea is to slow down digestion, so complex carbs, fiber and high proteins work the best.  I also agree with everyone who mentioned water and keeping hydrated.

Of course, everyone's body is different and you have to find what works for you.
