Can I just say that it's really awesome that someone can lose 5 pints of blood from a wound and still be alive and home with his family on a Sunday afternoon?

Thank you everyone who called, sent emails, posted on FB and in Backstage and provided emotional support.  And thanks again to the medical staff, people who donated blood, etc. for saving a life that is so important to me.

Also, thanks to those of you who donate blood.  If it weren't for people like you, I would be minus a husband and my children would be minus a father right now.   I said all this on Facebook, but I wanted to say it here too.

I hate to hijack this gratefulness, but did you know I and several others here who would have loved to help in that way are legally prevented from giving blood? John Kerry recently brought the news back to light, and many people donate blood anyway, but it is currently illegal.  My blood probably wouldn't have even been useful to this situation (I don't even know my blood type for sure), but even if I had wanted to help I couldn't have.

There is one thing you never put in a trap, if you're smart - if you value your continued existence - if you have any plans about seeing tomorrow there is one thing you never EVER put in a trap. Me.

Listen, I don't know what sort of kids you've been flying around with in outer space, but you're not telling me to shut up!

As long as I don't bleed or cry, I'll do it!

This makes me so so sad.

It makes me so so angry. And sad. But mostly angry. There's no reason for a policy like that to stay in place. I know so many gay men that could and would give blood, and it just makes me sad.

Double sad and angry for selfish reasons because I don't think I can do it right now-- medicines-- and I would in a heartbeat. Needles ain't scare me none at all. But I am going to go get checked out, there's a blood drive around here soon-- I can't remember if it's just plasma I can't donate or what. GRR.

Mister A., I'm glad you did mention that.  I've been following it recently, and it's utterly insane.   I actually can't donate blood because I travel outside the country so often ... and the U.S. is totally paranoid of other countries for some reason.   I really do think that a lot of unnecessary discrimination goes on when it comes to blood donation.  They screen all the blood anyway, so whatever!  But the gay thing is just downright ridiculous.

Well, I don't care if the blood Dave got belonged to a gay, black, transgendered, Mexican who visited Egypt in the last few months.  I'm just glad it was available.

I need to donate more.  I'm O+ and have really strong blood.  It must be strong, because it takes FOREVER to get out of my vein (once they find one) and into a bag.

Thanks for the reminder.  Glad everyone is ok.

To further hijack... my place of employ does a blood drive once per quarter.  I was basically harrassed by certain members of our HR team about not donating, until I brought to light that it was illegal for me to do so.  Didn't bother me much, as I'm out... but what if it had been someone who wasn't?

I wish I could give blood.  I technically can, but every time I try to give blood, I pass out immediately afterward and then am horribly ill for a week.  It really sucks because I enjoy giving blood, or atleast the idea of it.  It makes me feel like I'm making a difference.
