I am having an inconsequential dilemma about headshots that I'm sure will be solved as soon as I can get home, see if I have any printed, and then not panic if I don't.  This is prompting me to wonder what headshot etiquette is lately.  Are color shots ok?  Is anyone going to FREAK OUT if they're not 8x10 glossies?  How recent do they have to be?  I'm asking for the masses, really, because it's been a while since we've had this kind of a post/discussion.

The only part I can really answer is that they should be recent enough that the director can see that it looks like a recent picture of YOU.

The rest I think is really a free-for-all anymore.  Head/shoulders vs. 3/4 shots and b&w vs. color I don't think anybody really cares anymore for theatre.  Commercial auditions, naturally, are a different ball of wax.

The last I heard anything about headshots was when my husband was accepted to McCartey two years ago.  They seemed to prefer the color head and shoulders look at that time.  Considering they haven't asked him to update his headshots, I assume that's still the style.

But that's for commercial.  I haven't heard specifics for theatre in ages.

I'm told that in film/commercial stuff, color headshots are the thing now. I don't know, really.

I do film and commercial stuff (i'm with Talent management group) and they prefer color headshots...the two of me on their website are different; one is up-close of just my face and the other is a "bust": Head shoulders and both are full color.

I have heard that theater doesn't matter as long as it looks like YOU and is a clear shot of what you look like. Depending on the theater, I don't even think it needs to be 8x10 but they usually tell you what they want. I know more about film/commercial/industrial stuff than theater. but I use the same headshot for both genres.

inconsequential dilemma

I love this term.  Makes me smile-like.   Smiley  "Inconsequential Dilema".  I make name my memoirs that... should I ever write such a boring masterpiece.  Yeah, so, I can confirm that in film they like color headshots best, since of course most films are now in color.  I spent much of last year looking through hundreds of headshots for a project I was part of.  For theatre, you can't go wrong with black and white though.  There's just something nice about them.  Glossies always impress more than printed sheets of paper, though the cost is of course higher.
