My mom and I will be in NYC in the middle of October for just a couple of days.  I really want to take her to see a show or two.  She's a conservative 71-year-old woman, a voice teacher, and mother to a family of actors.  She's relatively open-minded, but prefers to avoid foul or crass language and subject matter.  I know I really want to see "In the Heights", and I think she might like it.  But "Billy Elliot" will not align with her tastes.  What else is fantastic and should not be missed, that she and I can see together?

Wicked, of course!
The Little Mermaid was wonderful!
Mary Poppins! I would have LOVED to see it, but I couldn't find ANY tickets even from my favorite street sellers.

People are often unreasonable, illogical, and self-centered; forgive them anyway.
If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives; be kind anyway.
If you are successful, you will win some false friends and some true enemies; succeed anyway.
If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you; be honest and frank anyway.
What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight; build anyway.
If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous; be happy anyway.
The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow; do good anyway.
Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough;
give the world the best youve got anyway.

You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and God;
It was never between you and them anyway.

You might try the Off-Broadway Our Town. It's certainly the show I most want to fly to NY to see.

"The 39 Steps" was a lot of fun and nothing questionable in it, as far as I can remember.  "Next to Normal" was absolutely amazing, but the teenage daughter uses the "F" word fairly often.  I saw it with my 63 year old conservative but open minded mom and she really liked it (even though she didn't like the language).

I'm going to be in NYC for 4 days in mid-october. My wife and I have tix to In the Heights, Hamlet (with Jude Law) for $25, West Side Story, and a new musical called Ordinary Days (that is in a 60-seat theater).

I'd also suggest Shrek or Bye Bye Birdie.

Little Mermaid is closed.

Good luck getting tix to Wicked on this short of notice.

Hated Mary Poppins.

I think In the Heights would be good.  Also West Side Story was rather enjoyable.  There's also Bye Bye Birdie and South Pacific... I've not seen either, but both have had good buzz.  I'm just starting to hear about Ordinary Days... sounds interesting.
