I'm looking at auditioning for MFA programs in January/February. I've made a giant spreadsheet comparing what different programs nationwide have to offer. I've also looked a little at programs in Canada and the UK. There's only so much research I can do before I need to talk to real people. Do any of you PA people hold an MFA? Do you have any friends who do? Where from? What was your experience like?

Depending on what MFA you are trying to get, I might have some information for you.  Are you looking at an MFA in Acting, Directing, Dance, etc. ?

I got my MFA in Acting from University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.  Brilliant program.

MFA-Directing from University of Alabama; grad 1996. Good experience (actually started the MFA-directing program at U of Iowa and transferred). Selective and small, only one grad director per year (no more than three at any given time). Association with Alabama Shakespeare Fest then, changed since but still connected I'd assume. Pretty flexible program; was able to come close to designing my own curriculum; certainly was able and encouraged to focus on specialization. On top of that it really bred the producer-head essential to successful directing.

I'm fairly familiar with a number of others, either through professional association or direct experience.... have you narrowed down to anything approaching a short-list?

I've seen UCLA and USC MFA Acting Programs as having a flexible enough curriculum to get involved in both theater and film. USC's MFA program just graduated their first class this year, so I'm not too sure how they measure up against UCLA.

Hey BlueRoses, I'd love to hear what schools you decided were best. I have a friend looking into MFAs right now, too.  This thread has been invaluable.

Let me make one thing quite clear: I never explain anything.

I am looking at MFA Acting programs. I have some interest in directing, but acting is where my main passion and focus are. I've looked at you alma mater, Jared, but they are not recruiting this year. Sad

The National Conservatory in Denver is at the top of my list--awesome program with full tuition paid, and it is located near the National Center for Voice and Speech (I've worked professionally as a singing teacher and voice/dialect coach).

I am also intrigued by the classical acting programs at the Old Globe in San Diego and the Shakespeare Theatre in DC. I adore Shakespeare, but I also like contemporary stuff too. I do a lot of musical theatre, but don't want to limit myself to just that. I've done film work, but don't find it as satisfying as theatre. High on my list are programs which employ Meisner Technique (such as Penn State), and also programs that offer full tuition or teaching assistantships. U of Alabama sounds interesting, but I have had a hard time finding answers to my questions on their website.

I have fleshed out my spreadsheet, which includes nearly 90 MFA acting programs. Most programs accept a new class of students each year--but some which interest me a lot only recruit every 2 or 3 years and are not recruiting this year.

I am looking at attending URTA in January/February. These are combined auditions which include over 40 schools attending. Many schools not attending URTA are holding auditions in NYC the same week. Here's the URTA website: www.urta.com
