going to New York, that is! Grin My wife and I are going in May to celebrate our 25th anniversary, and could use some input.
We're arriving on a Friday afternoon and leave on the following Monday afternoon, so obviously, it would be possible to see five shows, but is that realistic?
Also, what shows would you suggest? I know we both want to see Wicked; other than that, we're pretty open... Phantom of the Opera, Billy Elliot, Jersey Boys, Hair, In the Heights , Guys and Dolls, West Side Story, etc.

Haven't been for a while, but if it were me, I'd go see Shrek, Little Mermaid and Mary Poppins.

Have you considered seeing an opera at the Metropolitan Opera in Lincoln Center? It's pretty dang awesome. They're doing La Cenerentola (Cinderella) by Rossini in May....it's a "lighter" opera (no brass bras/horns) and it's a comic one, too.

Skip Phantom.  The version I saw in Salt Lake was just as good, if not better, than the one on Broadway.  Then again, you may be able to get half price tickets.

In the Heights is one to see, and you'll never see it done as well as here.

Funnily enough there is a play called "my first time" which is what I thought this thread is about.  It's wonderful.  And offensive.

Unlike Kitch, I would skip Shrek and Mary Poppins, and maybe even Little Mermaid... but then again, I like a lot of acting and amazing music in my shows, not just spectacle.

There's an off broadway musical called "Title of Show" that if it's still playing is a great one.

Yeah, I would definitely skip Little Mermaid (I've seen it and it wasn't anything amazing compared to other b-way shows I've seen).  I'm going in April and have tickets for Billy Elliot, In the Heights and The 39 Steps.

ha ha thats funny. when i was in NYC in 03, there was billboards for phantom of the opera EVERYWHERE, and their new marketing slogan was "remember your first time". barf. anyway...

i would skip mary poppins for sure. i saw it in london when it opened, and i think i would have had more fun sitting at home watching the movie.

SEE IN THE HIEGHTS. not seeing that is my one regret the last time i went.

go to broadway.com and look up their list of shows playing now. try to see something off broadway too. it can be hit and miss with off broadway, but it will ALWAYS be something new, and there are wonderful gems with great acting that are overlooked because they aren't BROADWAY musicals. some new ones that i know NOTHING about, but they really intrigue me are "Happiness", "Rooms", and "the story of my life".

See Shrek.  I LOVED it.  Also see In the Heights if you can.  Wicked is always a plus.

yeah... I'd focus on getting tix now if you're planning to come in may.  Don't get your heart set on anything, especially the big name shows, until you have tix.  You'll be here over the weekend, and May is prime tourist season.

Depends what kind of shows you like.
West Side Story will be open and it's classic. It should be fabulous. Guys and Dolls also should be good if you like the oldies.
No matter what you like, go see IN THE HEIGHTS! It's amazing! will blow you away.
I'm not sure if waiting for godot will be open but it should be fabulous with Nathan Lane.
Mary Poppins I loved if you like disney, same with Lion King. Little Mermaid I could skip. Same with Phantom as someone said before.
Jersey Boys and Wicked as both super popular, but I think they were both worth all the hype.
Yeah, i would definatley hit in the heights, no question.

If you go to playbill.com they list all the shows playing on Broadway & Off-Broadway. You can also register (for free) and then you can get discounts to certain shows (usually the ones that aren't selling out). You can click on any show for more info - casting, synopsis, how to get tickets, etc.

I want to see Jersey Boys again!!!! However, it is playing in Vegas so that's one reason I didn't see it last time I went but I have been very sad I didn't see it. The first time I saw Mary Poppins I didn't enjoy it but we loved it the second time. I don't know when Blithe Spirit opens but that should be a great show too. One thing we learned last time we went is don't go see a show just because of who is in it - you may not see the person you were hoping to see!!! If you want to see the show anyway, that's a different story.  Anyway, that's my two cents!

you know if you have tix to a show, and the star is out, they will refund your ticket or exchange for another day...
