What are some roles that you long to play that you would never in a million years get cast in?

I was just listening to the Evita soundtrack, movie version (I know, I know) and I was just thinking how awesome it would be to play Che.

(random sidenote:  it's been a while since I had listened to it and I had forgotten how incredibly pitchy Madonna is. I don't think she hits a single note! This would've been an incidence where AutoTune should not only have been acceptable, but insisted upon!)

hmm...

I have a lot of female dream roles. Bakers Wife in ITW, Kathy in Last 5 Years. Mama Rose in gypsy. Mrs. Lovett in sweeney todd. Maureen in Rent. Norma Desmond in Sunset Blvd. Lucille in Parade. Dot in Sunday in the Park With George. Kate Monster in Ave q. Velma in Chicago. Sally Bowles in Cabaret. Fosca in Passion.

i could go on and on.

when it comes to male parts, there aren't many. I have kinda come to terms with what kinda roles i am bound to play, and have realized that those are the roles i WANT to play. So there aren't many male dream roles that i trust i will get to play in the future.

For me, it's roles that I've now aged out of.  I would have loved the opportunity to play Viola or Juliet.  Those will never happen now.  Or singing roles that require someone who can do more than carry a tune.  Audrey.  Adelaide.

And Hamlet.

The Witch.

Though, I have played the lady before in shows, all it would take is one good, open-minded Into The Woods casting director and I could rock it like... a... rocker....

Also, anything dramatic.  I tend to be drawn to and cast in comedic roles.  I honestly don't know anymore if I could do a serious part, but I'd love to try someday.

Who's they?  Do they?  Why's it harder?  No, I'm just a natural goofball and it comes easy.  Drama would be my challenge - the two dramatic roles I had in high school I still made 'em laugh, so I kind of just gravitated to the comic relief roles.

Like, honestly, out of the two male supporting roles in A Little Night Music, though I'd love to do either one, I could do Carl Magnus in a heartbeat, but Henrik... that would be stretching it.  Henrik is beyond my reach (and not just because I can't play the cello).

There are those who would say that all roles are beyond my reach.

I only agree on days where I have had less than four hours of sleep the night before.

Why, yes, I only had 3 hours and 45 minutes of sleep last night.  Why do you ask?

My skills are as varied as they are impractical.

i LOVE that show. add Desiree to my list.

i don't know who "they" are. its just a quote. in fact i think a famous playwright said it. anyway...i know how you feel, only i am exact opposite. i love dramatic roles, and i feel so much more comfortable playing the serious stuff than i do the comedy. i'm just not that funny onstage. comedic timing is a talent i was not blessed with.

Apparently Josh Lucas said it once.

So did a person apparently named Paul Venier

A bunch of other people tend to disagree

But a girl named Blair Lewin, who has the same background as I do in Lucille Ball agrees with you.

I guess those are the people who say it.

I have always wanted to play Radames in Aida but I can't sing a lick.  I have the body for it though which is nice.  I also wish I could play Aticus Finch from Mockingbird but I need a few more years under my belt.

Sarah in Ragtime. Forever barred. And like Spiker, I'll never play Juliet, simply because I'm not diminutive enough. Likewise Jane Eyre (which breaks my heart).

There are some fine points to playing comedy over drama, like knowing how and when to "punch" certain lines.  God knows I can't seem to get that down, but the ONE time I was even remotely successful in playing comedy was when I didn't even know it was a comic part.  Doing a scene in class from "The Gingerbread Lady," I could have sworn it was a pretty dramatic scene involving an actor whose life was falling down around him, but every line I said got nothing but uproarious laughter.  I was shocked.  I did the same scene a few day later, only trying some "comic" techniques and got nowhere near the laughs.  The instructor explained this was because  I was "asking for a laugh, instead of the butter," and told the famous story behind that line.  The moral to that story to me was, when in doubt, just play it seriously (the laughs will come if they were meant to be).

That said, I think I shall never get to play the romantic lead, unless it's a part that calls for a certain amount of irony and/or stark realism that flies in the face of theatrical convention.

I'd love to play the American in "Chess" (I know the more recent versions actually give him a name, I just like the original concept album).

Hamlet, maybe, but honestly he doesn't cross my mind that often (I'm often more likely cast as Claudius when Shakespeare talent is short, and even more likely as Rosencrantz or Guildenstern).

Che in "Evita" would be fun.

Come to think of it, besides not having the singing chops in the first place, a lot of musical leads elude me because even before my voice changed, I never sang tenor.

My number one dream role of all time is Jack in Into the Woods but I think i've aged past it by now... all the theatres that have done it lately have cast really young guys... But I would love the opportunity to play him, just for the chance to sing "Giants in the Sky."

I'd also love to play Radames (like everyone else) and Roger or Mark in Rent. Jamie in Last 5 Years, Leo in Parade, the Phantom, Emmett in Legally Blonde, Corny Collins in Hairspray, and Fiyero in Wicked.  I also think they need to make a stage version of Moulin Rouge, and I'd LOVE to play Christian.

I have to say though that with few exceptions, it's really unfair that the female parts get all the REALLY good songs.

Coalhouse Walker Jr... unfortunately I am very white... sigh... I LOVE that role and the vocal range is perfect for my voice.

Fuhgeddaboudit! You and me (even though you are a total stranger-- hello stranger!) will put on a backwards cast of Ragtime and be Sarah and Coalhouse.

What? It's totally doable. IT TOTALLY IS. Wink

And hello to you! and YES!!! let's do it! We will just reverse the races on all roles and change the whole story! I will write a script ASAP!

That which we persist in doing becomes easier for us to do.  Not that the nature of the thing itself has changed, but that our ability to do increased.&&-Ralph Waldo Emmerson

1. Hamlet (Getting too old and fat and I just don't audition well enough to ever imagine anyone casting me in that role, though that cockeyed optomist part of me will always pine for the role and believe I could do it if given a chance... Hell, I'd go on the Skeletor diet and drink the entire fountain of youth to play the role if need be.  Anyhow, moving on...
2. Othello (I don't even tan well)
3. Superman (Maybe I could be Lex Luthor though  Wink )
4. Indiana Jone's son (Curse you Shyla Buff!)
5. Anakin Skywalker (WTF Hayden?)
6. Gavin Cole (Only Swami would even know who that is)
7. Cyrano de Bergerac (Though I do have quite the nose)
8. Dracula (Maybe Count Von Count from the Street, though)
9. Anyone who has to sing well....
10. Just wanted to have ten.  OCD, sorry.  Grin

Cried for continuous hours
Yelled and screamed for help
A girl who turned her back on the world
and a girl who did nothing but love someone.

Listen, I don't know what sort of kids you've been flying around with in outer space, but you're not telling me to shut up!

As long as I don't bleed or cry, I'll do it!
