I just got back from New York and I had the pleasant opportunity to see Shrek the Musical with Sutton Foster.  I had never seen Sutton live and wondered what all the hype was about her... now I know.  She has the most AMAZING stage presence I have seen in a long time.  Brian D'arcy James was a disappointment as Shrek but I think it was a directors choice.  He tried to be just like Mike Meyers in the movie while everyone else made their own character choices.  It had the ability to be one of the best new shows on Broadway I have seen but because Shrek was so far below everyone else it was just a good show.  There is some really good music and there will be some audition pieces coming from the score too.  The end of Act I rivaled Wicked I SWEAR!  The song was GORGEOUS and very powerful.  Has anyone else seen this?  What did you think about the ensemble?  Did you enjoy the way they were spread around?  I want to know other thoughts.

i JUST got back from NY yesterday and i saw this show while i was there.  I LOVED it!  Sutton Foster was funny, but my favorites were Christopher Sieber (Lord Farquaad) and Daniel Breaker (Donkey).  THEY WERE BRILLIANT!  Sieber did the entire show on his knees and he was absolutely brilliant.  his tiny character choices were so clever and funny.
It was a really fun show to see.  My friend and I were laughing the whole time.
The company numbers were so fun. Pinnochio was awesome.  The way they did Gingy was fun too.
The night i went I was on the 9th row, and donkey broke character when i laughed at him...if you know me and my laugh, you will understand why.  it was priceless and brilliant.

anyway, i disagree with your feelings on Shrek however, though he wasn't the STRONGEST character in the show, i felt he held his own, and the chemistry between shrek and princess fioan was awkwardly perfect.

anyway, that's my 2 cents on it.

I LOVED this show. Totally wasn't expecting that.

Anyone interested, I uploaded the music

I especially recommend Track #9 (Who I'd Be) and Track #19 (Our Story)

This is good to  know. I am going to New York in May of next year and I saw this would be playing. I didn't really want to see it, but now I'm going to have to listen to the music and check it out. Wasn't Sutton Foster the original Millie in Thoroughly Modern Millie? If so, I have seen her. She's awesome and that would make me want to go more.

Unfortunately "Your Mom" Shrek will be closing January 3rd Sad  Apparently it wasn't as fantastic as we thought it was to the general public.  I would suggest RACE with James Spader, David Allan Grier, Richard Thomas and Kelly Washington.  Looks awesome!  Also I hear 39 Steps is amazing too!

Well that sucks! Thanks for the suggestions though, I will be sure to check out which of those we should see! Thanks, Bruce!

I'm going crazy over this show. I think it's brilliant.  I'm pretty sure that if I were majoring in Musical Theater, I would write my Thesis on this show.

Hmm, something about how contemporary true love is robbed by the mythical love presented in fairy tales, and how constricting the "ideal" we strive for can be when there's something so much better than the ideal available but most people don't know how to recognize it.

Yeah...something like that.
