I watched episode 1 of season 1 a few months ago, but it seemed old and hokey and I thought I must be watching the wrong version of the series. My grandpa used to watch it when I was young and I remember the super curley afro-who from the 1970 version and this looked like it might be an 80's version at first.

I checked the date last night and saw that it was actually 2005 that I was watching so I gave episode 2 a go. It was... better. At least no worse than any Star Trek Next Generation episode that I would still enjoy today. Presumably over 5 more seasons it gets really fantastic. Am I watching the right thing?

It does get better, and less cheesy. They were playing a bit safe in those first few, but if you get halfway through the season, you'll hit 'Father's Day'. That's the episode that really hooked me.

Good to know. I wasn't even trying very hard in the first episode because I thought it was surely not the right one (because the actor playing the doctor was not who I thought was playing the doctor).

I'll keep at it. Smiley

The super-curly afro Who was Tom Baker, who played the Doctor for 8 years from 1974 to 1981.

If Father's Day doesn't hook you, hold out for the Empty Child, and see where you are from there. "Dalek" was my hook, from an old Who-fan standpoint. It was incredible to see the Daleks actually be a force to reckon with, rather than rolling pepper-pots. It was also amazing to see the Doctor as a burnt-out soldier feeling his hatred for the enemy one final time. Honestly, it was a Doctor I didn't expect to see.

Also, as far as hooks, I started backwards and watched series 4 first, so that's what hooked me, and then I went back to the beginning and gluttedwatched that concurrently as series 4 played in real-time each week.  So there ya go.  I don't know how it might have turned out if I'd gone in at 1x01.

Lately I've been drawing people in by having them watch "Blink" (series 3, Carey Mulligan episode) and then immediately starting them on the Matt Smith/Karen Gillan series (series 5). It seems to do the trick!

I started from the beginning, and upon re-watching series 1 a few months ago, I honestly cannot tell you what made me stay with it. I watched up to "Father's Day" and then I remembered. So stick with it, Big D! <3

I think part of it was that I identified really strongly with Rose at that point in my life, though on second and third viewings I can clearly see the faults in the character (though I still love her). I'd say my favorite companions now are Donna (s4) and Amy (s5).

I think I'll be okay.  I stay up with Baby Dexter every night from 9-12 while Mrs. Dexter sleeps and usually we spend it watching TV together, and I'm already looking forward to episode 4.

I like how British people don't have to be hot to be on TV. Smiley

*snort* I like how British actors have a bit of personality. (I think Billie Piper is effing adorable. Catherine Tate is equally so, and can be really lovely when she's not pulling her amazing faces. And have you SEEN Karen Gillan and Freema Agyeman? GOOORGEOUS.)

I LOVED Chris Eccleston as the Doctor. More so than David Tennant. *ducking*
