Title: What is Fair Game for an audition? Post by ticklemedana on Dec 1st, 2010 at 3:27pm
I helped a friend out with some auditions a few months ago, ie sat and helped him take notes, and noticed that of the 50 some-odd people who auditioned, at least 5 auditioned with something from the Glee soundtrack/arrangements.
Now, granted, it was at a small community theater in another part of the state, so maybe it didn't matter, but it got me thinking: What is fair game for an audition? I know everyone always wants to find that SONG, the one not every person will be singing, and be unique and not too cliche', but is something like Glee really acceptable in general theater circles? |

I think anybody who thinks Glee is still unique is likely deluding themselves. People should avoid it now because I would imagine everyone is doing it.

Considering that a fair amount of the music on Glee is FROM musical theater, I think it's odd to rule it out. Now, the fact that the numbers from Broadway shows they use are often the overdone stuff that should generally be avoided in auditions unless you can absolutely nail it should be more of a consideration that whether it's a Glee arrangement or an original Broadway arrangement. And as for the pop and other style songs they do on Glee...well, the same thing, really. If it's a good song for showcasing the auditioner's voice, and suits the style of the show...why not? Unless it's a horribly overdone song.
(So says the girl who does not have a particularly good track record for successful auditions, so take my thoughts for what they're worth.) |
