Title: I guess I saw a different CZJ in A Little Night Music
Post by MRC on Jun 14th, 2010 at 10:54am
because when I saw it she didn't deserve applause much less a Tony for her performance.

Very disappointed in the Tony voters this year... but then the b'way seasons have been less than stellar for the last couple of years...

Although, Bernadette Peters will be taking over for CZJ and Elaine Stritch for Angela Lansbury in mid-July... CAN'T. WAIT. SO. EXCITED. MIGHT. WET. MYSELF!

I concur. She seemed kinda jumpy during that song. It was weird. I loved CZJ's acceptance speech though. Adorable!

BP and The Stritch sound like an incredible duo. P.S. Does Bernadette age?? Woman looks fantastic!

I too was underwhelmed by the Hollywood-heavy Tony winners. I was happy to see Katie Finneran win, who I loved in Wonderfalls.

I was completely entranced by the American Idiot number. Has anyone seen that show? Wow.

This! (BP and Helen Mirren, omg. Girls, let gravity take its course and stop making the rest of us be afraid that we won't look like you eventually.)

I was excited to see John Gallagher, Jr. I dig that kid. And I like her, but did anybody else think Lea Michele kinda squawked her way through her number?

Lea Michele frightens me.

Eh?  Isn't The Goddess Bernadette only 32?  Why would you say this?

Kind of the nature of artistic taste. It's subjective. I still wonder how Jonathan Demme and Sam Mendes managed to make two versions of The Silence of the Lambs and American Beauty, because the ones I saw were outrageously heavy-handed and full of over the top performances, but then there's the other version of each that everybody loves and won all of those awards and routinely end up on "All-Time Best" lists.

However, in this case I don't know what the prevailing opinion of CZJ's performance was. You may well be in the majority. Either way, my point remains that it's all subjective and we are at time left confused and scratching our heads.

I'm not sure what you're talking about. Two versions of American Beauty and Silence of the Lambs?

Unless you mean Manhunter, but that was a prequel and directed by Michael Mann.

*scratching head*  :-?

Manhunter is the same story as Red Dragon, actually. It's not truly a prequel as both novel and film came before Lambs.

I was going a step further metaphorically with MRC's idea of "a different CZJ". It's a "what movie did you see"? kid of thing. My point is I can't imagine the movies I saw getting the kind of acclaim those did.

Yes, I knew that; that's what I meant. Hence my confusion. Sorry if I confused you by my incorrect use of the word "prequel."

No worries. Perhaps we should explore the topic further in the movies section.

May I look as 32 when I am her 'real' age!

so we saw the new cast with Bernadette Peters and Elaine Stritch today.  Bernadette was divine.  Elaine forgot most of her lines... would LOVED to have seen Bernadette and Angela Lansbury do it.

BUT, it was much better than with CZJ.  Bernadette was amazing.  She was as Desiree should be.  Perfect.
