Title: Phantom Sequel
Post by Cheeky Monkey on Mar 14th, 2010 at 5:17pm
You know, the one where the Phantom has a show at Coney Island?  ::)

Anyway, reviews of the London production are starting to come in: http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20350095,00.html

I cringe just thinking about how this thing actually exists. I'm embarrassed for all involved.

I posted a few of the songs on my site so people can have a chance to listen to them...

But I kinda like the orchestrations... they are beautiful. And the main two songs are kinda great!

I'm planning on seeing it this June in London. Really looking forward to it since it's gotten majorly mixed reviews.

We'll see... I'm not too keen on the idea, but at the same point it is what ALW does best - BIG SPECTACLE!

agreed. haven't liked one song i've heard from it. this is pathetic. i mean...it is brilliant on ALW's behalf, becuase he KNOWS the masses will come see it...but how aweful! i feel bad for the people that go see this instead of something worth the money.

don't get me wrong, I am not ashamed to admit that i LOVE some of his work. I ADORE sunset blvd, and Evita...

but really?! This show, the music, the entire concept around it...it is all ridiculous...and a waste of time and money...

I didn't like the rest of what I heard-- it didn't catch my attention at all-- but I thought "Til I Hear You Sing" was really pretty.

Thanks, Spencer!

Reading the plot description on your website, I'm betting even money that Christine and Raoul's kid is really the Phantom's.

Oh C'mon. You know they totally did it.

That is certainly the way it played out in a book by Susan Kaye called "Phantom"

Oh jeez, really? Oy vey.

K, so I read the synopsis of this on Wikepedia, and I gotta say, among the many things wrong with this, one glaring item is the fact that they made the Phantom so friggin sympathetic.

The whole attraction of the Phantom is his mystery and danger. He kills, tortures, and blackmails people for goodness sakes!

Anyway, better not say more as it would spoil.

I do have one question though. Does the Phantom musical also make him sympathetic? (the one based on the book Dexter cited)

Okay okay, so I finally had a chance to listen to the songs on your blog, Spencer. And I gotta, say, I agree with you!

Love Never Dies is quite the showstopper. I have a question though. Haven't I heard this song before? I could've sworn I've heard an opera singer sing it for an Andrew Lloyd Webber even on PBS or something...

I kinda like it too... the story is a bit hokey, but if it's enough of a spectacle I don't really care. I never thought that this would be ground-breaking theatre, but it seems, at least, entertaining.

I'll be seeing it this June when I go to London!

Really?  This is ALW we're talking about here... of COURSE you've heard this song before.  It may have had a different name and been in a different show, but you've likely heard it.

He reuses A LOT.
