Around the Globe Theatre Company’s “Bob Juan Casanova”, an edgy new play, benefits from strong acting and directing

It’s always enjoyable to attend a new work that is homegrown right here in Utah. “Bob Juan Casanova” is a “provocative new play” written by Robert A Easton that is presented from the perspective of Bob, a single guy living in Utah that isn’t Mormon, and his struggle to find love. Such references as “Miss Magna”, Mormon culture, Utah State University, Cache Valley, and the Sundance Film Festival all serve as influences in the writing and make this show easily relatable in a unique way to Utah audiences. Things That Sting and Bite

It’s that time of year again. No I’m not talking about the holidays. I’m talking about Wasatch Theatre Company’s Page-to-Stage Festival, currently in its eleventh year. If you are unfamiliar with this wonderful annual event, I’ll bring you up to speed. The name really says it all: Page-to-Stage. Every year WTC invites local playwrights to participate in various writing workshops and staged readings for the purpose of developing and honing their craft. An invitation is also extended to the public to submit their work for the chance to have it reviewed, and God willing, selected for production. Continue reading

“The Tempest” – Not so much a storm as a light breeze

While the Around the Globe Theatre Company’s performance of Shakespeare’s last great play stays incredibly true to the original text, the performance itself leaves something to be desired. Though it is clear that the director, Beth Bruner, has a solid understanding of the intricacies of Shakespeare’s writing (especially the stage directions cleverly written into the lines), and that all the actors have impressive command of the language, the performance sagged with a lack of energy and an incredibly slow pace. Uncut Shakespeare is an ambitious goal for any modern theatre company, and Around the Globe’s production did not move at a pace quick enough to hold the audience’s attention through the entirety.
