Meet Ben. Ben is a 26-year-old investment banker. Ben likes beer, sports, and Emily. And Chris. “Straight” is a provocative new play that deals with fidelity, sexuality and identity in “post-equality” America. Funny, sad, sexy and surprising, this three-character drama takes a hard look at the moral complex of a generation that prides itself on the pretense of acceptance.
“’Straight’ is smart, bracing and brimming with clever wisecracks and thought-provoking observations on sexual identity.”—The New York Times
Playwrights Scott Elmegreen and Drew Fornarola will attend opening night of the regional premiere and participate in a post-performance panel discussion, with members of the cast, crew, Salt Lake LGBT community, and local government.
Elmegreen and Fornarola will conduct their “Developing New Plays” Master Class Saturday, March 10, 1-3 p.m. The master class event is free and open to the public as a Utah Rep community gift. Participation is limited to 16 seats, so please contact Utah Rep at utahrep.org, if you wish to participate.
In “Developing New Plays, ” the playwrights discuss the development of new works, and the class applies the lessons through a series of practical exercises. The Master Class will have acting, writing and directing components, and is generally excellent for students focusing in any of those disciplines. Additional insights will be offered to theater appreciators who want a better understanding of how new works advance from the kernel of an idea to a fully realized show.
